A man was taken into custody along with a lorry while transporting a stock of turmeric and cashews worth lakhs of rupees, which were illegally brought into the country by sea, Kalpitiya Police say.
Police stated that the raid was conducted yesterday (14) in the Naachchikalliya area based on special information received.
Upon inspecting the lorry, officials discovered 742 kg of illegally imported turmeric and 800 kg of cashews.
The arrested suspect is a 35-year-old resident of the Pallivasalthurai area in Kalpitiya.
Kalpitiya Police are conducting further investigations regarding the smuggling methods and the individuals involved in this racket.
