Former Galle District Parliamentarian of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Sampath Athukorala was attacked with a sharp weapon by an individual in the Bambarawana area of the Pitigala police division.
Reports indicate that around midnight yesterday (17), the former MP went to investigate a group of individuals behaving in a disruptive manner, during which one person assaulted him with a sharp weapon.
The injured former MP was immediately admitted to the Galle Karapitiya National Hospital following the attack.
He has since been discharged after receiving medical treatment.
Pitigala Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
