Water levels at the Victoria Reservoir fell to less than one-tenth of capacity due to heavy use for electricity generation, leaving the Kundasale area without drinking water for fifteen days. Former Central Province Governor Sarath Ekanayake states that the government's poor water management led to this crisis, forcing residents to pay for water tankers.
The reservoir never reached such a low level in its history, and the former governor notes that proper management during periods of abundance would prevent such issues. He claims the government focused on power generation while neglecting the priority of drinking water and agriculture, warning that continued dry weather will worsen the situation.
Industries in the Pallekele zone, including those under the Board of Investment, face a massive crisis, and the shortage deeply affects factory workers. Sarath Ekanayake urges the government to address these conditions immediately.
