Alawatugoda Police are conducting investigations to arrest a man who allegedly sold his wife to a neighbour to obtain money for drugs, as well as the individual accused of raping her.
The 35-year-old mother of three jumped into the Kandy Lake in an attempt to take her own life following the incident.
A three-wheel driver rescued her and handed her over to the Akurana Divisional Secretariat.
She was subsequently admitted to the psychiatric ward of the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital for treatment.
She disclosed the reasons for her suicide attempt to the doctors.
The woman stated that her husband, who is addicted to drugs, had previously sold a kidney five years ago for 1.1 million rupees and used that money to purchase drugs.
The mother of children aged 13, 12, and 10 stated that her husband pressured her to have sexual relations with a neighbour when he lacked money for drugs.
She told doctors that the man tied her limbs and assaulted her.
Unable to bear the mental trauma following the incident, she decided to jump into the lake.
While she receives treatment at the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital, the Deputy Director of the hospital informed the Child Protection Authority and the Akurana Divisional Secretariat in writing to take measures to ensure the safety of the three children.
The administration of the Peradeniya Hospital took steps to provide information to the Alawatugoda Police regarding the two individuals accused of selling and assaulting the woman.
