Electricity generation costs revised for second and third quarters

The National System Control Private Company submitted a report to the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) revising electricity generation cost estimates for the second and third quarters of 2026.

Rising fuel prices in the global market serve as the primary reason for these revised cost estimates. The new report indicates that the cost of generating electricity for the period from April to September 2024 increased.

The PUCSL is now considering the necessity of an electricity tariff revision based on these new cost estimates. Although the National System Control Private Company submitted a proposal on the 6th of this month to increase electricity tariffs by 15% for the second quarter, the Commission postponed the consideration of that specific proposal.

The PUCSL decided to hold a public consultation regarding the proposed new tariff revision. The decision of the Commission regarding the price hike is scheduled for announcement on May 09.
