The General Treasury informed the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka that the government will provide a 15 billion rupee subsidy, despite National System Operator Private Limited requesting an 18% increase in electricity tariffs. Jayanath Herath, Director of Communications for the commission, told Hiru News that the commission recommended a 95% tariff hike is unnecessary for consumers due to this financial support.
National System Operator Private Limited submitted a new proposal to the Public Utilities Commission the day before yesterday, seeking the 18% increase for the second and third quarters of the year. This follows a previous proposal made on the 6th of April, which suggested a tariff rise of approximately 15% for the second quarter.
The new proposal from National System Operator Private Limited states that the 31 billion rupee deficit recorded in the second quarter rose to 38 billion rupees. This increase is attributed to the rising price of fuel in the global market.
