Sri Lanka plans to quadruple domestic honey production

Special plans are underway to quadruple domestic honey production, Director General of Agriculture Dr Thushara Wickramaratchi said.

He made these remarks today (18) while participating in a bee commemoration walk from Peradeniya to the Sahas Uyana in Kandy to mark International Bee Day, which falls on the 20th of May.

Accordingly, the expectation is to increase the current annual production of 50 metric tonnes to 200 metric tonnes.

One-third of the human diet depends on bees, and 35% of agricultural production occurs through the pollination process.

The Director General further pointed out that if bees become extinct, the world will lose 500 billion dollars in income, and food security will collapse.

Meanwhile, this year's main Bee Day commemoration is scheduled to be held at the Bee Development Unit of the Wariyapola Agricultural School.
