The Department of Meteorology has announced that the southwest monsoon is gradually becoming established across the island.
According to the latest weather advisory, several areas are expected to experience intermittent showers or thundershowers today (23), including the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North Western provinces, as well as the Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya districts.
Heavy rainfall of around 100 mm may occur at some locations in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts.
Light rain is also possible in the Anuradhapura district.
In addition, showers or thundershowers may develop in a few places in the Uva Province, as well as in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts, particularly after 1.00 p.m.
Fairly strong winds, ranging between 30–40 km/h, are expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills, and across parts of the Northern, North Central, North Western, Southern provinces, and the Trincomalee district.
The Department of Meteorology has also urged the public to take necessary precautions against temporary strong winds, lightning, and other hazards associated with thundershowers.
