Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa held a special meeting with Canadian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Isabelle Martin, at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition in Colombo.
During the bilateral discussion, the two sides reportedly focused on Sri Lanka’s macroeconomic challenges as well as the social and economic difficulties that have emerged following the destruction caused by Cyclone Ditwah.
The Opposition Leader emphasised the need to prioritise immediate relief, rehabilitation, and livelihood restoration for affected and vulnerable communities, noting that global assistance is essential for the country’s recovery and reconstruction efforts.
He also reiterated his recent appeals to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) regarding Sri Lanka’s ongoing economic situation.
Appreciating Canada’s climate, financial, and development initiatives, Premadasa highlighted the “Access Sri Lanka” project—a CAD 5 million programme aimed at strengthening climate-smart agriculture, improving sustainable land use and watershed management, and empowering women farmers in Sri Lanka’s vulnerable dry zone.
The discussions further covered issues related to democratic governance, human rights, and long-term ethnic reconciliation. Premadasa reaffirmed his commitment to fully implementing the 13th Amendment to the Constitution and stressed that holding Provincial Council elections is an essential part of strengthening democracy in the country.
