A growing scam involves fraudsters impersonating senior police officers through fake WhatsApp and Telegram accounts to extort money. The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) issued this warning to the public, noting that scammers use photographs and identities of senior officials to create these fake profiles before contacting individuals via phone calls, WhatsApp messages, and Telegram chats.
Victims receive threats of various accusations or legal action before being asked to make payments or financial contributions. Authorities emphasised that the Sri Lanka Police do not request money through social media platforms, messaging applications, or personal accounts.
The public should avoid sending money to anyone claiming to be a police officer through such channels and must verify suspicious communications. Anyone who encounters these scams should report them immediately to the nearest police station or relevant authorities.
