Harin Fernando clarifies UNP future direction

Former minister Harin Fernando says that former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, after undergoing successful bypass heart surgery, now appears to be about 10 years younger and has regained renewed energy.

Speaking after a United National Party (UNP) meeting held yesterday, Harin Fernando also made a light-hearted remark that not only has Wickremesinghe’s intellect remained strong, but his “back has also become stronger” following the surgery.

He noted that the party leader re-engaged with party discussions after about three months to focus on future activities, upcoming steps, and the party’s anniversary. In particular, discussions were held on how to move forward as a united opposition with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).

The meeting, focused on party organisation, the appointment of new organisers, and the formation of youth wings. However, no discussion was held on changing the party leadership, as Harin Fernando emphasized that such a need has not arisen since Ranil Wickremesinghe is in renewed physical condition and energy after his surgery.

He further stated that Wickremesinghe has assigned responsibilities related to discussions with Sajith Premadasa and the coordinated work of a united opposition to relevant special committees, in order to ensure more structured progress moving forward.
