The Secretary General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), Golam Sarwar, met Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya before departing at the end of his tenure.
According to the Prime Minister’s Media Division, the courtesy call took place today (22) at the Temple Trees.
The Prime Minister warmly welcomed the SAARC Secretary General and appreciated his service in promoting regional cooperation and advancing the objectives of the SAARC organisation.
The discussion focused primarily on the 'Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children' scheduled to be held in Colombo tomorrow (23).
The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of the entire region working collectively to ensure the rights, protection, and welfare of children living across South Asia.
The Secretary General briefed the Prime Minister on the current activities of the SAARC Secretariat and key regional programmes implemented under the SAARC framework.
Special attention was directed towards SAARC's efforts to strengthen food security and enhance child nutrition through improved cooperation among member states.
The Prime Minister also pointed out the importance of establishing close relations between SAARC and other regional organisations to share best practices and develop regional connectivity and cooperation.
