Police inspector remanded for accepting bribe

The police inspector arrested by the Bribery Commission for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs. 1 million inside a hotel in Kalutara North was remanded until the 3rd of July by Colombo Additional Magistrate Lahiru Silva today (23).

An inspector of police named Udaya Kumara, who was attached to the Kalutara South Police Station and performed duties in the Kalutara Special Crimes Investigation Division, was thus remanded.

The Bribery Commission conducted this raid yesterday (22) night based on a complaint made by a businessman to the commission.

The Bribery Commission informed the court that the Kalutara Special Crimes Investigation Division conducted an investigation regarding a vehicle belonging to the complainant, and the suspect police inspector demanded a sum of Rs. 1.1 million to report facts normally and return the vehicle to the owner without filing criminal charges against the vehicle before the court.

The commission informed the court that a sum of one lakh rupees from the agreed money was taken as a bribe on the past 30th, and officers of the Bribery Commission who were lying in wait arrested the suspect along with the money while he was accepting the remaining sum of Rs. 1 million inside a Kalutara hotel yesterday (22) night.
