Excise revenue exceeds 141.5 billion rupees

Tax revenue amounting to 141.5 billion rupees was collected and credited to the government by the Department of Excise during the initial half of 2026.

Specific targets designated by the government for the first six months ending June 30, 2026, stood at 119.3 billion rupees out of a total annual goal of 245 billion rupees. Performance yielded a high collection rate reaching 118.6 percent compared against established objectives.

Revenue grew by 120.91 percent relative to the 117.03 billion rupees gathered during the corresponding period in 2025, according to Excise Commissioner General M. B. N. A. Hemaratne. Absolute alcohol volumes utilised for liquor manufacturing climbed by 113.6 percent to reach 19.6 million litres during the first half of 2026, rising from 17.25 million litres recorded across the first six months of 2025.

Measures implemented by authorities successfully secured and elevated excise earnings despite periodic price hikes enforced by the government aiming to suppress alcohol consumption.
