Why has Thailand revoked visa-free entry for Sri Lankans?

Thailand will withdraw visa-free entry privileges for Sri Lankan nationals starting 15 September, following a series of illegal acts involving Sri Lankan citizens.

Speaking at a post-Cabinet media briefing, Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath announced that the Royal Thai Embassy has confirmed all Sri Lankan travellers must obtain a visa before departure from that date onwards.

Minister Herath explained that the policy shift comes after recent incidents of lawbreaking, including narcotics being smuggled from Thailand to Sri Lanka and instances of monks arriving with illegal substances.

In response, the Sri Lankan government has initiated talks with Thai authorities to establish a formal bilateral agreement on visa arrangements. The Department of Immigration and Emigration, alongside the Attorney General’s Department, is currently drafting the proposed framework.

Minister Herath is scheduled to visit Thailand on 14 September to discuss the matter directly with Thai officials, expressing confidence that a finalised agreement will soon restore visa facilities for Sri Lankan citizens.
