T20 World Cup drives early 2026 tourism surge

Sri Lanka recorded 401,787 tourist arrivals during the first 45 days of 2026, marking a 12.5% year on year increase, according to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority.

The growth was largely driven by sports tourism, with cricket fans travelling from key markets such as India, the United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Germany, China and the United States during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup period. Colombo and Kandy, as host cities, reported near full occupancy in city hotels, with spillover demand extending to Mount Lavinia and Negombo.

The momentum was particularly strong in February, with the first 12 days recording 124,460 arrivals, a 19% increase compared to the same period last year and a daily average of 10,372 visitors.

Official monitoring indicated steady spending patterns, with heightened demand for accommodation, transport and leisure activities on match days. Visitors during the tournament period also recorded longer stays than seasonal averages, reflecting a combination of cricket related travel and leisure tourism.

Industry officials said the sector is on track to exceed early year revenue projections, supported by higher per guest spending and extended stays. At the same time, digital promotional initiatives are being strengthened to address comparatively lower individual spend levels and to showcase Sri Lanka’s diverse attractions beyond cricket.

The Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management has intensified training and capacity building programmes to maintain service standards during the surge, introducing specialised modules in event hospitality, sports tourism management and digital marketing.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau has leveraged the global spotlight from the tournament to promote Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions tourism, positioning Sri Lanka as a competitive business events hub in South Asia. Several high-profile international events are already in the pipeline, supporting efforts to diversify tourism revenue streams and ensure sustainable growth.

The Ministry of Tourism, together with the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau and other affiliated agencies, said it remains committed to sustaining the positive momentum throughout 2026, building on the global visibility and economic gains generated by the tournament.
