The news about the underage Japanese girlfriend the daughter of a rich businessman in Japan, who came to the island with her Sri Lankan boyfriend and the ensuing drama attracted a lot of attention recently.
The couple was found hiding at a house in Mudunkotuwa, Marawila belonging to a cousin of the boyfriend. The girl was revealed to be four months pregnant when they were found. The mother of the Japanese girl had lodged a complaint with the Kochchikade Police in March 2020 alleging that her daughter had been abducted by a Sri Lankan youth from Japan.
She had told the police that the Sri Lankan youth had abducted her daughter from Japan with nearly one million rupees in her possession. The couple, who arrived in the country in March, has also been hiding in Nawalipitiya, Trincomalee and Minuwangoda.
The case is ongoing and the Negombo Chief Magistrate today (18) granted some relief to the girl who is in probation.
The young girl, Sora Otaki, is preparing for childbirth in the second week of April.
Defendant's lawyers stated in court today that she was not in a good frame of mind to deliver a baby while in custody.
The lawyers also stated that the mother of the girl had agreed to give the daughter in marriage to the Sri Lankan youth considering the future of the unborn child.
After considering probation reports and facts presented by both parties, the Negombo Chief Magistrate ordered the girl to be handed over to the young man's aunt (mothers elder sister) on a surety bond.
The young boy's mother is a defendant in the case and the court is unable to hand over the girl to her.
The magistrate also issued a notice to summon an official of the Japanese embassy at the next court date to inquire whether the couple's marriage could take place in the Embassy premises.
The couple eloped and arrived in Sri Lanka, and were traced by the police at Waikkala following a complaint lodged by her mother.
Speaking to Hiru News, the girl, aged 16 years and five months into her pregnancy, she said last year in Npvember “I came willingly with the Sri Lankan boy. I was harassed at home. I cannot go back to Japan. I married my Sri Lankan lover willingly. I cannot go back to Japan.”
