Case against former CBSL governor Cabraal and Pres. Sec. Lalith Weeratunga dismissed

Former Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal and former Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga have been acquitted of charges in a case filed by Ven. Thiniyawala Palitha Thero.

Palitha Thero filed a personal complaint against Ajith Nivard Cabraal and Lalith Weeratunga, accusing them of misappropriating public funds during Cabraal's tenure as the Central Bank governor.

The complaint alleged that Cabraal, who served as the Central Bank governor from 2006 to 2015, had authorized a payment and that this payment was made without obtaining Cabinet approval, and as a result, Cabraal was held responsible for criminal breach of trust and criminal abuse of funds.

The magistrate indicated that the complaint will be dismissed due to the prosecution's failure to provide enough evidence to substantiate the allegations against the accused. Additionally, it was reported that the complainant had withheld information about a case filed against the accused in the Supreme Court, which further contributed to the decision to dismiss the complaint.
