Olympic medalist Susanthika Jayasinghe set to obtain Australian citizenship

Olympic medalist Susanthika Jayasinghe is reportedly preparing to obtain Australian citizenship along with her two children. Having left Sri Lanka two months ago, Jayasinghe has expressed uncertainty about her return to the country, with her move to Australia primarily aimed at prioritizing her children's education and future.

Jayasinghe, now 49 years old, made history in 2000 when she won a silver medal in the 200m at the Sydney Olympics, becoming the second Sri Lankan to win an Olympic medal after Duncan White. She is also the first Asian woman to win an Olympic or World Championship medal in a sprint event, and the only Asian athlete to secure an Olympic medal in sprinting.

In addition to her Olympic success, Jayasinghe is the first and only Sri Lankan to win a medal at the World Athletics Championships. She represented Sri Lanka at three Olympic Games: 1996, 2000, and 2008.

Susanthika's contemporary, Asian medalist and Olympian Damayanthi Darsha, also migrated to Australia with her family several years ago.
