After being abandoned for 15 years, a bus stand in Meegahakiula is finally getting a proper access road.
Construction began today to build the road, which was the reason the Rs.47 million bus stand was never used.
Several shops in the town were removed to make way for the new road.
According to a local reporter, the shop owners cooperated with the Meegahakiula Pradeshiya Sabha without protest.
The Chairman of the Meegahakiula Pradeshiya Sabha, T.M. Kumara Tissa, says the new road will help to get the buses that are currently parked haphazardly in the town into the new bus stand in a more orderly fashion.
He added that the move would also address public complaints about illegal activities that were reportedly taking place in the abandoned buildings.
The bus stand was built in 2010 with funding from the Asian Development Bank.
