The Border Control Computer System at the Immigration Department of Katunayake Airport has been out of order since approximately 1:45 p.m. this afternoon.
The system failure comes amid reports that immigration computer systems in Europe and other countries have also been hit by a "cyberattack."
According to sources at the Immigration Department, the current system has been in operation and maintained by a private company for 8 years and frequently breaks down or slows down, particularly in the afternoon.
The sources emphasised the urgent need for the government to install and maintain its own reliable system, especially during the current peak in tourist arrivals.
