Construction has begun on a new sub-post office building in the Bandagiriya Colony, Hambantota District.
The foundation stone for the building was laid this morning by the Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr Nalinda Jayatissa.
The new sub-post office is being built at an estimated cost of Rs.4.23 million and Minister Jayatissa said that construction will begin immediately and be completed by December of this year.
He noted that the government is making a planned effort to use public tax money for the public's benefit, adding that previous governments had neglected the postal service.
The Minister also said that a significant amount of money will be allocated to modernise the postal service in the next budget, with the goal of making it a profitable institution.
He also praised postal workers for using their personal equipment to keep the service running in the past when sufficient physical resources were not provided.
Among those in attendance were Members of Parliament Nihal Galappaththi and Athula Welandagoda.
