The Department of Meteorology reports that the Northeast Monsoon conditions are gradually establishing across the island.
Today (9), intermittent rain or thundershowers are expected in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Central, and Uva provinces.
Heavy rain exceeding 100 mm is likely in some places in the Northern and Eastern provinces, as well as the Polonnaruwa district.
In the remaining areas of the island, rain or thundershowers are possible here and there after 1:00 PM. Fairly heavy rain of about 75 mm can be expected in some places.
The Department also mentions that fairly strong winds of about 30–40 km/h are expected occasionally in the Northern, North-Central, and North-Western provinces, and the Trincomalee district.
Misty conditions may prevail in some places in the Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces during the early morning hours.
The Department urges the public to take necessary steps to minimise dangers from temporary strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
