Thirty-four school children sustained injuries and were admitted to the Bagawantalawa Regional Hospital after a bus transporting them from the Ranikadu area to schools in Bagawantalawa town met with a mishap.
The incident occurred around 7:30 AM in the Campion Estate area on the Ranikaduwa-Bagawantalawa main road.
The driver intentionally steered the private bus into a roadside embankment to bring the vehicle to a halt following a sudden mechanical failure in the braking system while in motion.
Four injured children were transferred to the Dickoya Base Hospital for further treatment, while the District Medical Officer stated that the condition of the remaining students receiving treatment at the Bagawantalawa Regional Hospital is not serious.
Bagawantalawa Police are conducting investigations into the incident.
