Will shift in Tamil Nadu politics affect Indo- Sri Lanka ties?

The political landscape of Tamil Nadu witnessed a massive transformation today as the newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, led by actor Joseph Vijay, became the single largest party in the 2026 Assembly elections. In a result that stunned analysts, the TVK secured 108 seats, leaving them just 10 short of a majority in the 234-member house.

A significant upset occurred in Kolathur, where VS Babu of the TVK defeated the incumbent Chief Minister MK Stalin by more than 8,500 votes. Conceding defeat on social media, MK Stalin noted that he accepts the public verdict and promised that the DMK will serve as an exemplary opposition. The election saw a record turnout of over 84 per cent, ending the long-standing dominance of the DMK and ADMK.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked voters who supported the NDA and congratulated the TVK on their performance, pledging that the central government will continue to support the state's progress. As the TVK prepares to elect Joseph Vijay as their leader in Chennai tomorrow, the party celebrated unexpected victories, including R Sabarinathan winning Virugambakkam by over 27,000 votes.

The party now turns toward government formation and its manifesto promises, such as providing 8 grams of gold for marriages and monthly financial aid for women.

Elsewhere, the Congress-led UDF looks set to regain power in Kerala, while the NDA remains in control of Puducherry.

In a major shift in West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party ended 15 years of Trinamool Congress rule by winning 206 seats.

Mamata Banerjee conceded after losing her Bhabanipur stronghold to Suvendu Adhikari by over 15,000 votes.

Prime Minister Modi described the win as a triumph of governance, though Rahul Gandhi of the Congress alleged electoral malpractice.

How does this election result affect Sri Lanka?

Despite the TVK raising issues like Kachatheevu and fishermen disputes during the campaign, experts suggest this rhetoric rarely impacts international relations.

Speaking to Hiru News, Senior journalist P. K. Balachandran said that current relations are the province of the union government, which decides the nature of relationships with other countries. P. K. Balachandran explained that while state parties voice opinions, decisions are taken by the centre in New Delhi, and Sri Lanka should focus on the central government's stance.

According to Balachandran, every political leader in Tamil Nadu speaks on these issues uniformly to represent a specific provincial stand, but it does not mean they can implement these views. He noted that the influence of Tamil Nadu politicians over Sri Lanka policy has almost disappeared since the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. P. K. Balachandran stated that Tamil politicians and parties have distanced themselves from the issue, and Sri Lanka no longer figures prominently in their political interests.

Addressing why these topics still appear in campaigns, Balachandran noted that parties must cater to all sections, including Tamil nationalists who follow the Sri Lankan situation. However, he clarified that it is no longer a major factor that determines election outcomes, as that era has passed. He concluded that while the issue arises when fishermen are detained, it does not carry the political weight it once did.
