A school student and two women died after a eucalyptus tree near the main road collapsed onto a three-wheeler travelling from the Nawalapitiya Mapakanda area towards Nawalapitiya.
The Nawalapitiya Police stated that the driver of the three-wheeler survived the incident, which occurred this morning at around 6:45 am.
Nawalapitiya Police officers and local residents worked together to cut and remove the tree to retrieve the bodies of the three victims, which were then sent to the Nawalapitiya District General Hospital.
Local residents claimed that the relevant authorities were notified long ago to cut and remove the tree, which decayed over time. They stated that this disaster occurred because no solution was provided, resulting in the tree collapsing onto the three-wheeler.
