Five members of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) representing the Opposition in the Bulathsinhala Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) have been removed from their council positions with immediate effect.
Those who have lost their seats are SJB group leader Nihal Mendis, along with Mohamed Nishard, Kanti Pelawatta, Ayesha Chamali, and Pushpa Samarasinghe.
Allegations have been made that these members received money during the formation of the Bulathsinhala Pradeshiya Sabha. A video containing related evidence was reportedly handed over to Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa by a well-known Buddhist monk from the Bulathsinhala area.
It is reported that the video and audio recordings allegedly confirm, through the voices of the councillors themselves, that money was received. Following a formal investigation led by MP Jagath Withana, the decision to remove them was taken.
