Three schoolchildren who went swimming at Galle Face beach were caught in strong waves and swept away from the beach.
Police say two of them have been rescued.
The rescued children have been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital, police added.
Meanwhile, search operations are underway to locate the missing child, police said.
The victims are reported to be between 12-15 years old and residents of Maligawatta.
