The Sri Lanka Police have issued a special public awareness notice regarding sexual abuse, theft of money and property, and even murders targeting women through social media and various communication platforms.
The notice, issued by the Police Media Division, states that in recent times incidents have been reported from different parts of the country where fraudsters deceive women by making false promises of marriage.
Police say that in many cases, women are sexually abused and their property stolen after being drugged or rendered unconscious by being given food or drinks laced with intoxicating substances.
It has also been observed that some individuals posing as romantic partners gain women’s trust, obtain money and property, and in some tragic cases, these situations have ultimately led to murders, police said.
The Inspector General of Police has taken the matter seriously, and all police stations, public security committees, intelligence units, and civil officers have been instructed to gather information on individuals who may be at risk.
Accordingly, Sri Lanka Police urge the public, especially women, to follow the following advice:
Protection of money and property: Do not trust unknown persons met via the internet or social media and hand over money, jewellery, or valuable property.
Sharing sensitive data: Never share intimate or sensitive photos or videos with unknown or suspicious individuals.
Personal information: Avoid sharing confidential details such as national ID numbers, bank account details, and private addresses with strangers.
Reject suspicious invitations: Refuse invitations for meetings or transactions received through suspicious phone calls or messages.
If you or someone you know is affected or at risk of such fraud, you are advised to immediately report it to the nearest police station or the Women and Children’s Bureau.
Complaints can also be made via the hotlines 118/119/107/109.
Sri Lanka Police further urge the public to remain vigilant at all times to avoid falling into traps set by such fraudsters and to protect their safety and dignity.
