Dengue cases hit 1,000-plus in a day for first time this year

Amid a rapid increase in the spread of dengue, 1,069 new cases were reported in a single day on  June 21, according to the National Dengue Control Unit.

Acting Director of the National Dengue Control Unit, specialist Dr. Kapila Kannangara, confirmed that this is the first time this year that daily dengue cases have exceeded the 1,000 mark.

With the ongoing rainy weather, mosquito breeding has intensified across the island, pushing the total number of dengue cases in the country to over 46,000.

The highest number of cases has been reported from the Western and Southern provinces, with more than 12,000 cases identified in June alone.

Health authorities warn that if the situation continues to worsen, hospital capacity could come under severe strain. The public is strongly urged to seek medical attention if they experience fever symptoms and to take immediate steps to keep their surroundings clean to prevent mosquito breeding.
