India-China ties on path to normalisation

Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval spoke with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday on the sidelines of a BRICS National Security Advisers' meeting in New Delhi, according to India's foreign ministry.

The bilateral talks, described by India's foreign ministry as "constructive and forward-looking," focused on recent developments in the relationship between the two nations and noted progress towards gradual normalisation. Relations between the neighbours improved in 2024, ending years of friction that began with a border clash in 2020.

A Chinese foreign ministry readout stated that both sides must respect each other's core interests and properly handle sensitive issues. Wang Yi urged the resumption of bilateral dialogue mechanisms alongside promoting exchanges in trade, finance, law enforcement, and media. Additionally, Wang Yi noted that the BRICS mechanism should actively advocate the promotion of the multi-polarisation process. New Delhi is hosting the meeting of the BRICS national security advisers on Monday and Tuesday, as India currently chairs the BRICS group.
