Energy Minister pledges to pass on fuel price benefits to the public

Energy Minister Anura Karunatillake stated that the government will provide relief to the public whenever global fuel prices decrease.

Addressing a request for fuel price relief made by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, the Minister added the following:

"We provide a subsidy of Rs. 100 for diesel and Rs. 20 for petrol. Fuel subsidies are not granted equally. The Cabinet has allocated a limit of 57 billion for subsidies, and this amount is not fully utilised.

We cannot say right now that prices will be changed. Decisions must be made according to global market prices. Fuel prices have increased since March, coinciding with the start of the conflict in the Middle East. We do not know who made the decision for the war. Prices in the Sri Lankan market increased due to price hikes in the global market. When global market prices go down, we will provide that advantage. We will definitely ensure that price reductions are passed on to the consumer."
