The procurement of coal for the Norochcholai Lakvijaya Power Plant received approval from the Cabinet of Ministers to fulfil 2026/2027 requirements.
Accordingly, Aditya Birla Global Trading Singapore Pte. Ltd. was approved to supply 70% of the total share, amounting to 1.596 million metric tonnes.
The approval permits India-based Mohit Minerals Limited to provide 30% of the share, amounting to 0.684 million metric tonnes.
Approval to secure 2.28 million metric tonnes of coal was granted by the Cabinet at its meeting on March 30, ensuring uninterrupted supply and safeguarding national energy security.
The selection of two suppliers followed an international competitive bidding process that attracted nine bids, authorised by the National Procurement Commission.
Based on recommendations from the High-Level Standing Procurement Committee, the proposal of the Minister of Power to award contracts was endorsed by the Cabinet.
The move expects to stabilise coal supplies for the Norochcholai plant and reinforce the energy security strategy of Sri Lanka.
