Case against Mahindananda to be called in December

Colombo Additional Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama ordered yesterday (25) to call the case filed by the Bribery Commission against two suspects, including former Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage, over an incident of importing a sub-standard organic fertiliser ship into the country during the previous government, again on December 4.

This order was issued after considering facts presented by officers appearing in court on behalf of the Bribery Commission by submitting a further report.

Former Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, the first suspect in the incident, was produced before court by prison officers.

Mahesh Lasantha Gammanpila, the second suspect in the incident, appeared in court.

Charges were filed against these suspects over an incident of allegedly causing a loss of over 130 crore rupees to the government by opening letters of credit before obtaining legal approval for the import of a sub-standard Chinese organic fertiliser ship.

The Bribery Commission informed the court that preliminary investigations regarding the matter were concluded and action was being taken to file extracts.

The case related to the incident is scheduled to be called again on December 4.

Mahindananda Aluthgamage is currently serving a prison sentence regarding another case.
