Kandy magistrate Nalaka Weerasinghe today (1) ordered the National People's Power municipal councillor for the Kegalle Municipal Council to be remanded until the 9th of this month in connection with an alleged financial fraud involving 26 million rupees for a cabana project.
The suspect, identified as thirty-four-year-old Kasun Madusankha Bandara, a resident of Kegalle who represents the Olagama ward of the Kegalle Municipal Council, was arrested by the Colombo Central Crime Investigation Bureau.
Authorities apprehended the suspect this morning around 10:25 at a hotel in the Yattogoda area in Kegalle before presenting him before the Kandy Magistrate's Court this afternoon.
The investigation stems from a complaint lodged with the Colombo Central Crime Investigation Bureau by Ramesh Thilan, a businessman residing in Kandy. The complainant initially reported the matter to the Kegalle police, who subsequently filed a B-report before the Kegalle Magistrate's Court.
The case was later transferred to the Colombo Central Crime Investigation Bureau, which also reported facts to the Kandy Magistrate's Court via a B-report.
According to the complaint, the suspect had taken 26 million rupees under the pretext of setting up a cabana project on a land plot belonging to the complainant in Minuwangamuwa along the Kegalle-Divela road, but failed to construct the project and instead misappropriated the funds.
Taking the submissions into account, the court issued the order to remand the suspect until the 9th and postponed the case until that date.
