Sri Lanka tourism confirms island is safe for travel despite cyclone effects

The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) assured prospective tourists that the island remains safe for travel, as weather conditions improve following the movement of Cyclone Ditwah further north towards Tamil Nadu on the eve of Saturday, November 29.

The SLTDA released a statement on Friday (November 28) declaring, "Sri Lanka remains safe and open for travel and tourism. Major tourist destinations are operating as usual, with hotels, transport services, and attractions continuing without disruption."

Weather Update and Safety Measures

As of Sunday (November 30), weather conditions in Sri Lanka were improving with light rain showers, according to the Department of Meteorology.

  • The Department's statement mentioned that "Fairly strong winds up to 50 kmph at times can be expected over Northern Province. The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers."

  • However, the European Union’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre on November 29 still forecasted that flash floods, landslides, and riverine flooding are likely.

  • The SLTDA stated that "Comprehensive safety measures are in place, with tourism partners working closely alongside local authorities to ensure your comfort and security." They added that weather updates are provided through official channels to aid travelers in planning their journeys.

  • Tragically, the weather conditions over the weekend claimed 334 Sri Lankan lives, with 370 people missing, as of November 30.

Tourism Outlook and Assistance

Historically, Sri Lanka experiences its highest annual tourist inflows during December.

Regarding recent performance, First Capital Research noted that while Sri Lanka expected to match its 2018 tourism earnings potential of $4.4 billion for the year, earnings remained subdued. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) reported that total tourism earnings from January to October amounted to $2,659 million, with October earnings recorded at $186.1 million.

The SLTDA advised that for queries or assistance related to the prevailing weather conditions, the Sri Lanka Tourism Hotline-1912 is active 24 hours a day. Support will be provided in coordination with the Tourist Police, Disaster Management Centre, and other relevant authorities island-wide.
