Sofia Colombo becomes Sri Lanka’s first GSTC-accredited hotel

In a landmark achievement for Sri Lanka’s hospitality sector, Sofia Colombo has become the country’s first hotel to receive accreditation from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), marking a significant step forward for sustainable tourism in the island nation.

The certification, issued through Control Union—an accredited GSTC certification body since 2016—recognises Sofia Colombo’s commitment to sustainability across environmental protection, social responsibility and economic viability, while maintaining standards of refined luxury hospitality.

Sugath Illangakoon, General Manager of Sofia Colombo said the achievement positions it at the forefront of global travel trends, particularly as many countries, including those in the European Union, are expected to prioritise GSTC-certified properties from 2027 onwards.

“This certification enhances long-term business potential, setting Sofia Colombo apart as a leader in responsible tourism.”

At Sofia Colombo, sustainability is integrated into every aspect of the guest experience, from eco-conscious operational practices to community-driven initiatives aimed at promoting responsible tourism.

On the occasion, chefs curated a special menu featuring locally sourced ingredients and mindful cooking methods designed to reduce environmental impact while celebrating biodiversity and culinary heritage.
