CBSL clarifies Governor’s remarks on future interest rates

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) has clarified that certain remarks made by its Governor during a recent media interview were misinterpreted and subsequently reported by several print and electronic media outlets.

The CBSL said that, as communicated by the Governor at the latest Monetary Policy Review in July 2026, the current monetary policy stance was assessed to be appropriate in light of prevailing and anticipated global and domestic economic conditions.

The CBSL conducts monetary policy in a forward-looking and data-driven manner. Accordingly, decisions on whether to increase, decrease or maintain policy interest rates are made at each monetary policy review, taking into account the latest available economic data, forecasts and risk assessments.

The Governor’s remarks were intended to convey this established policy framework and did not constitute any commitment or indication regarding the future path or level of policy interest rates, the CBSL said.
