The All-Share Price Index (ASPI) declined steadily throughout the day to close 0.64% lower at 21,479.07.
Meanwhile, the more liquid S&P SL20 Index fell 0.72% to settle at 6,040.91. With today’s performance, the ASPI remains 5.06% lower year-to-date, while the S&P SL20 Index is down 1.89% from the beginning of the year.
The reason for today’s relatively sharp sell-off, following the ASPI’s marginal decline yesterday, was not immediately clear. Fundamentals surrounding Colombo stocks remain strong, as reflected in the June quarter earnings that were completed last week, while the technical set-up also points towards a potential recovery.
Market breadth was largely negative, with only 45 gainers against 156 decliners. The ASPI’s decline was primarily driven by Sampath Bank, Dialog Axiata and Commercial Bank of Ceylon.
Market turnover stood at Rs. 2.04 billion, well below the year-to-date average daily turnover of Rs. 4.02 billion. Turnover was led by John Keells Holdings, Asiri Surgical Hospital and Melstacorp.
Sector-wise, activity was led by Capital Goods, Food & Beverages and Healthcare Equipment.
Meanwhile, reaffirming the strength of the local economy, the Manufacturing PMI rose to 55.0 in July 2026, with broad-based improvements across all sub-indices.
The Services PMI also increased to 61.4 in July 2026, led by transportation, financial and professional services, with all three activities operating at a faster pace than in the previous month.
