Austria dominates Jordan for first WC win in over 3 decades

Austria secured their first World Cup finals victory in 36 years with a thrilling 3-1 win over debutants Jordan at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium. Romano Schmid opened the scoring for the European side in the 21st minute with a spectacular strike into the top corner following an assist from Xaver Schlager. Jordan fought back early in the second half, equalising in the 50th minute when Ali Olwan curled a beautiful shot past the Austrian goalkeeper after being set up by Noor Al Rawabdeh.

The match took a dramatic turn when veteran forward Marko Arnautovic appeared to restore Austria's lead from a corner mishap, only for the video assistant referee to disallow the goal after replays showed the ball struck the arm of Stefan Posch. Ralf Rangnick's side persevered and reclaimed the advantage in the 76th minute when Jordan defender Yazan Al Arab accidentally flicked the ball into his own net from another dangerous corner. Arnautovic finally sealed the historic win deep into stoppage time, converting a penalty in the 102nd minute after a handball by Saleem Obaid in front of a crowd of 68,527 spectators.

The result marks Austria's first triumph at a World Cup tournament since they defeated the United States 2-1 on 19 June 1990. Jordan, currently ranked 67th in the world, earned plaudits for a resilient performance but now face a crucial must-win fixture against Algeria on Tuesday to keep their tournament hopes alive. Austria turn their attention to a monumental clash on Monday against reigning champions Argentina, where Lionel Messi sits just one goal away from breaking the all-time World Cup scoring record.
