Austria dominates Jordan for first WC win in over 3 decades

Austria secured their first World Cup finals victory in 36 years with a thrilling 3-1 win over debutants Jordan at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium. Romano Schmid opened the scoring for the European side in the 21st minute with a spectacular strike into the top corner following an assist from Xaver Schlager. Arnautovic finally sealed the historic win deep into stoppage time, converting a penalty in the 102nd minute after a handball by Saleem Obaid in front of a crowd of 68,527 spectators.

The result marks Austria's first triumph at a World Cup tournament since they defeated the United States 2-1 on 19 June 1990. Jordan, currently ranked 67th in the world, earned plaudits for a resilient performance but now face a crucial must-win fixture against Algeria on Tuesday to keep their tournament hopes alive. Austria turn their attention to a monumental clash on Monday against reigning champions Argentina, where Lionel Messi sits just one goal away from breaking the all-time World Cup scoring record.
