Muñoz strike sends Colombia into Knockout stage

A place in the World Cup last 32 was secured by Colombia following a hard-fought 1-0 victory against DR Congo at the Estadio Guadalajara.

A deflected 76th-minute strike from wing-back Daniel Muñoz proved to be the decisive moment in front of a passionate crowd of 45,358 spectators. Colombia dominated large periods of the encounter but endured a frustrating evening of missed opportunities and disallowed goals before finally breaking the deadlock.

The South American side asserted control early on, with Muñoz missing a close-range chance in the 4th minute before having a 6th-minute goal ruled out for a marginal offside. Colombia continued their relentless pressure throughout the first half, but DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi stood firm. Early in the second half, Luis Díaz failed to convert a one-on-one opportunity, and Jhon Arias missed the subsequent rebound.

The breakthrough arrived when playmaker Juan Fernando Quintero delivered a clever pass to Muñoz, whose left-footed shot took a deflection off a defender to beat Mpasi at the near post. DR Congo attempted to mount a late comeback but failed to breach the Colombian defence.

The result leaves Colombia at the top of Group K with two consecutive victories, guaranteeing their progression. DR Congo remain third in the group and must defeat Uzbekistan in their final fixture to maintain any hope of advancing.

Muñoz emerged as the standout performer, providing a constant attacking threat that mirrored his recent form for Crystal Palace. The 30-year-old now has 2 goals in 2 tournament appearances, highlighting his ability to exploit defensive gaps. His tactical awareness and perfectly timed runs from the right flank proved too difficult for DR Congo to contain, cementing his reputation as one of the premier players in his position at this World Cup.
