Today marks 25 years since war hero Hasalaka Gamini Kularatne sacrificed his life to save the Elephant Pass camp from the LTTE.

A special celebration has been organized in commemoration of this, close to Hasalaka Gamini’s statue constructed in Hasalaka Township.

The ceremony is to take place under the patronage of the ministry of Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs.

Born on 22nd August, 1966, Gamini Kularatne joined the Sri Lanka Army in 1986.

Serving in operational duties in the Sinha regiment’s sixth force, on 14th July 1991 Gamini Kularatne armed himself with two grenades and jumped into the bulldozer of the terrorist laden with explosives and destroyed it and rescued the Elephant Pass camp from the LTTE, sacrificing his life in the process.

Had he not carried out that heroic fete on that day, those in the Elephant Pass camp might have been killed.
