Sri Lanka is aiming to attract over 3 million tourists and generate $5 billion in revenue in 2025, and SITA, a leading global provider of IT and digital solutions for the air transport industry, is highlighting the crucial role of advanced technology in shaping the nation's aviation and tourism future.

The country's aviation sector is already experiencing a significant increase in traffic. In 2024, Sri Lanka welcomed 8.88 million passengers, a 17.6% rise from the previous year. In the first half of 2025, arrivals grew by 16% to 4.9 million. Additionally, aircraft movements surged by 20% in 2024, and the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) is undergoing a major expansion. These developments emphasise the need for investments in seamless, efficient, and secure digital solutions for passenger travel.

Globally, the aviation industry saw record-high IT spending in 2024, reaching an estimated $37 billion, with much of the investment going into cloud migration, artificial intelligence (AI), and cybersecurity. A recent SITA survey revealed that 50% of investments are now targeting data-driven technologies like generative AI and large language models to streamline operations and enhance the passenger experience. These innovations also contribute to more sustainable aviation.

SITA’s Baggage IT Insights Report highlights how automation and real-time data are improving baggage handling. Despite a record 5.3 billion passengers in 2024, the rate of mishandled baggage improved by 8.7%, though it still costs airlines $5 billion annually. With the help of self-service bag drops and electronic tracking, 42% of passengers currently benefit from real-time baggage tracking, a number expected to rise to 82% by 2027. For Sri Lanka's growing tourism sector, these innovations are essential for maintaining efficiency and traveler confidence.

The country’s tourism-driven economy also requires secure border management. SITA's Advance Passenger Processing (APP) solution, already used in over 70 countries, enables authorities to screen travelers before they board. This prevents high-risk individuals from traveling while providing a faster arrival experience for legitimate passengers. The adoption of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Digital Travel Credential (DTC) standard, which uses biometric verification and digital passports, could also play a key role in enhancing border security and passenger flow.

As BIA modernizes, SITA is well-positioned to assist Sri Lankan aviation stakeholders with various solutions, including:

  • Passenger Flow Management: Streamlining check-in, boarding, and baggage handling with touchless and self-service options.

  • Data and AI Integration: Using predictive analytics to optimize airline operations and improve cybersecurity.

  • Baggage Management: Providing real-time tracking and automation to reduce mishandling.

  • Border Security and Facilitation: Deploying APP and digital credentials to balance security with convenience.

  • Sustainability Solutions: Offering tools for airlines to optimize flights and reduce emissions.

With global air traffic expected to reach 8 billion passengers by 2037, Sri Lanka’s ability to adopt these advanced digital solutions will be crucial for it to remain competitive as a regional hub.
