Mahinda Wijesekera was a revolutionary not just in words but in reality, stated former President and United National Party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The former President mentions this in a condolence message issued following the passing of Mahinda Wijesekera.
The condolence message issued by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe is as follows:
"I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mahinda Wijesekera, a revolutionary figure in Sri Lankan politics. I first met him in the 1960s as a university student. While I became involved in United National Party politics, he engaged in Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna politics early on and later joined the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, providing direct leadership to various programs across the country.
I wish to recall at this time that during the 2001 period, he joined the United National Front and provided great strength to the United National Party by taking direct leadership in the Matara district.
With 20 years and six months of experience in the Sri Lankan legislature, he was a seasoned politician and a remarkable man who left an indelible mark on the political world.
A powerful politician from the south, the service he rendered while holding numerous ministerial portfolios under various governments is immense.
The work he did as a Minister and Deputy Minister in the fields of Posts and Telecommunications, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Reforestation, Environmental Housing and Urban Development, Shipping, Ports, and Rehabilitation remains etched in the hearts of the people today.
A revolutionary not just in words but in truth, he departs while gifting the political world with Kanchana Wijesekera, a youth capable of carrying his vision forward.
I express the deepest condolences of myself and the United National Party to the family on the passing of Mahinda Wijesekera."
