Speaking at a press conference at the political office on Flower Road today (10), Abeywardena detailed the events leading to this decision.
According to Abeywardena, the former President was summoned to the CID on August 22, 2025, to provide a statement, after which he was arrested and produced before the Fort Magistrate's Court.
He was held at the CID for nearly six hours before being presented to the court around 3:00 PM.
Following lengthy deliberations and a power outage at the court, the Magistrate ordered him to be remanded until August 26, 2025.
Upon being taken to the Magazine Prison late that night, the former President’s blood pressure and sugar levels rose sharply, necessitating his admission to the prison hospital and subsequently to the Colombo National Hospital on August 23.
He was eventually treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and appeared for his court hearing on August 26 via Zoom.
While he was released on three personal bails of 5 million rupees each, he remained in the ICU until August 29.
Abeywardena highlighted that following his discharge, seven specialist doctors from the Colombo National Hospital were repeatedly summoned by the CID to be questioned regarding the medical reports and treatment provided.
The UNP Chairman argued that the mental pressure exerted on these professionals created significant doubt about how the government and CID would behave during any future surgeries or treatments.
Consequently, seeking medical care abroad was deemed the best option to protect the professional integrity of the medical staff and ensure uninterrupted treatment.
