The plan was discussed extensively during a meeting today between President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and officials from the Ministry of Transport and Highways, according to the Presidential Media Division. The first phase of the project aims to introduce electric train services from Maradana to Makumbura on the Kelani Valley line, Colombo Fort to Ragama on the Main line, and Colombo Fort to Panadura on the Coastal line. Discussions also focused on running electric services alongside existing rail operations and reconstructing tracks using standard gauge instead of the current width.
