A striking new addition to Colombo’s commercial skyline will be added tomorrow (11) July 2026 with the unveiling of the Nippon Office Building, a landmark office development commissioned by the Sasakawa Memorial Sri Lanka–Japan Cultural Center Trust.

The project was designed by Design Consortium International Limited (SCIL) under the direction of Principal Architect Migara Alwis, with the multidisciplinary consultancy firm playing a central role in shaping the building’s distinctive architectural identity and integrated technical solutions.

The Rs. 3 billion project comprises three basement levels, a ground floor and ten upper floors. Construction commenced with piling works in June 2022, while the main contract works began in January 2024.

Located at No. 85, Ward Place, Colombo 07, the state-of-the-art development is expected to redefine the future of workplace architecture in Sri Lanka through its contemporary design, sustainable features and innovative engineering solutions.

Conceived as a next-generation office complex, the Nippon Office Building reflects a major shift in the architectural language of commercial developments in Sri Lanka. The development combines advanced building technologies, flexible spatial planning and environmentally responsible design principles to create a modern workplace environment focused on efficiency, sustainability and user well-being.

One of the project’s defining architectural features is its unconventional building footprint, which evolved from the unique geometry of the site itself. Rather than imposing a standard commercial form, the design responds directly to the surrounding urban context, creating a visually distinctive structure that contributes positively to Colombo’s evolving cityscape.

The building incorporates a hybrid structural system that combines reinforced concrete with structural steel construction, enabling greater flexibility and structural efficiency. Its contemporary façade integrates steel elements with high-performance energy-efficient glazing, balancing aesthetic appeal with environmental performance.

Sustainability has been a key focus throughout the project. Advanced mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems have been integrated into the development to enhance operational efficiency, reduce energy consumption and support long-term environmental responsibility.

Industry observers note that the project represents a new direction for office architecture in Sri Lanka, responding to the growing demand for flexible and future-ready workspaces that prioritise collaboration, employee wellness and operational performance.

DCIL, one of Sri Lanka’s leading multidisciplinary consultancy practices, brought together specialists in Architecture, Civil and Structural Engineering, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Project Management and other technical disciplines to deliver the integrated design solution for the project.

The firm currently operates with a team of more than 88 full-time professionals.

The opening of the Nippon Office Building is expected to mark a significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s commercial property sector, establishing a new benchmark for modern office developments through its innovative design approach, technological sophistication and commitment to sustainability.

The event will be attended by Chairman of The Nippon Foundation Yohei Sasakawa, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka Akio Isomata and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya.
