Teboho Mokoena scored an 83rd-minute penalty to secure a dramatic 1-1 draw for South Africa against the Czech Republic in their World Cup Group A clash at the Atlanta Stadium. The late equaliser cancelled out a historic opener from Michal Sadilek, who struck after just five minutes and seven seconds to record the fastest goal of the tournament so far. The result leaves both nations tied on one point, keeping their qualification hopes alive ahead of their final group matches.

The Czech Republic claimed early control when Sadilek latched onto an Adam Sojka lay-off, firing past the South African goalkeeper before a crowd of 67,442. South Africa struggled to break down a resilient Czech defence, failing to register a shot on target until the 74th minute. The critical breakthrough arrived inside the final 10 minutes when a powerful shot from Thapelo Maseko struck the arm of Pavel Sulc inside the penalty area. Mokoena converted the resulting penalty, slotting the ball confidently into the bottom left corner.

The draw leaves both sides trailing Mexico and South Korea in the group standings. However, with the 8 best third-placed teams advancing to the round of 32, a win in their next fixtures will likely guarantee progression. South Africa face South Korea on Thursday, 25 June, while the Czech Republic take on tournament co-hosts Mexico at the same time.
