Substitute Johan Manzambi inspired Switzerland to a thrilling 4-1 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina at the Los Angeles Stadium, pushing his side to the top of Group B. The 20-year-old midfielder broke the deadlock in the 74th minute, firing a first-time volley past Bosnia goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj just 166 seconds after stepping off the bench. At 20 years and 247 days old, the Freiburg starlet became the youngest player to score a double as a substitute in a men's World Cup match.
The match turned chaotic in the final 20 minutes after Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic received a straight red card for bringing down Breel Embolo. Capitalising on the numerical advantage, Ruben Vargas doubled the Swiss lead with a precise curling finish into the bottom corner. Vargas then turned provider in the 90th minute, setting up Manzambi for his second close-range strike of the night.
Bosnia managed a brief response through Ermin Mahmic, who struck a spectacular consolation volley from a corner during stoppage time. However, Switzerland quickly restored their dominance when captain Granit Xhaka converted a late penalty following a foul on Djibril Sow.
The victory leaves Switzerland leading Group B with 4 points, whilst Bosnia-Herzegovina sit at the bottom of the table with a single point. Swiss manager Murat Yakin praised the impact of his young substitute, noting that Manzambi possesses immense freedom and unique street-football qualities that regularly surprise opponents. Switzerland now prepare to face Canada in their final group fixture with qualification to the knockout stages firmly within their grasp.
