The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court ordered the destruction of all food items at three Chinese supermarkets today (2) because the packaging lacked essential information, including manufacturing and expiry dates.

Colombo Additional Magistrate H. D. Darshima Perera presided over the hearing, which also resulted in one store receiving a fine of Rs. 100,000 and the other two stores receiving fines of 300,000 rupees each.

The Consumer Affairs Authority informed the court that it conducted raids on eight shops selling Chinese food products.

These inspections revealed that items at the three subject stores lacked any production details on their packaging.

After considering the evidence presented, the magistrate ordered the destruction of all such food found at the locations.

The Consumer Affairs Authority also reported that a store in the same complex received a 300,000-rupee fine yesterday (1).

The establishments penalized are located in a shopping complex on R.A. Mawatha, Colombo 3.
